I created this action for students who struggle with counting money OR for students who need an actress challenge.

While this math center would be best for kickoff or second grade, I really created it for my kindergartner. He often complains that kindergarten math at schoolhouse is too piece of cake. And since he loves his plastic hundred board, I idea that a hundred nautical chart would be the perfect tool to aid him larn to count coin.

I suspected he would similar this challenge, and I was right!

Next, he placed each coin on the chart. You lot tin see that he started out correctly – putting the quarter on the 25. But then he got dislocated when he got to the dimes. Where should they become?

He decided to start back at the meridian – 10, 20, 30 …

I helped him understand that you have to count upwardly from the final coin. And that ten more than 25 is 35.

Tip: Show your students that every time they move direct down on the hundred chart, they're adding 10. This makes it very easy to add a dime!

And so information technology went until he had completed half of the cards. We called it quits after that.

Tips for using the activeness

  • Model with the whole class first. You tin print enlarged copies of coins on cardstock, laminate, and put sticky tack on the back. So you can apply them with an enlarged hundred nautical chart that everyone can see.
  • Make sure your learners know the basics before pulling this out. If they tin't identify coins or name their values, this is going to go over their heads. (Become easier money activities at the stop of this post.)
  • Brand sure your students count the coins in this society: quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.
  • If y'all use this at math centers, be reasonable with your expectations. Tell your students how many of the 12 cards they need to consummate. I recommend having unlike requirements for different students.
  • This is a keen partner activeness because students can check each other's work. Information technology's easy to make a minor mistake, but if you lot pair learners of similar ability together, they are more likely to exist successful.
  • Always take students count the coins out loud later on completing a carte. They can motion the coins to see the numbers underneath if they're having problem.
  • After your students take washed this activity, give them a pocket-sized pile of coins and come across if they can count them without the hundred nautical chart. Let them apply the chart if they demand assist.
